Relaxation / Meditation Space

Writer: Crystal Childress AdkinsCrystal Childress Adkins

Just as we have other areas of our home dedicated to specific actions / habits, such as bathing in the bathroom and sleeping in the bedroom, if you want to cultivate calm and / or strengthen your meditation practice, it is only logical that there be a dedicated space for it. While there are no specific rules for creating a relaxation / meditation space, I offer these ideas for inspiration.

1. Choosing your space - It does not have to be a separate room. The space should be serene and calm, an out of the way nook or corner of a low-traffic room, even a closet or a corner of your backyard can work. Other things you may want to consider are the lighting and the access to fresh air.

2. Clean and uncluttered / No technology - Clutter can be stressful. Keep the space free of items such as paper, phones, and computers that can cause distraction.

3. Comfort - Whether you choose to sit on a cushion, chair, or couch, make sure you are comfortable.

4. Personalize - Set up a small table or landing place for items that are meaningful. Here are some suggested items for your table. .

  1. Nature - Small water fountain or aquarium / plant or bonsai

  2. Something personal - Buddha / photo of your dog

  3. Aroma - Essential oils, Incense sticks, incense burner/holder

  4. Zen Garden - crystals, sand, rake, etc.,

  5. Candle - for fragrance, motivations, and/or light

The bottom line is, there are many things to consider when creating your meditation / relaxation space. Choose a quiet spot to avoid noisy distractions and bring in only elements that bring you the relaxing feeling you are looking for.
