Get Involved: BeBraveBG

Amy Jarboe, Project Coordinator BeBraveBg

BeBraveBg was founded through Broadway United Methodist Church as a way to show encouragement and support to those working through the initial waves of COVID-19: hospital staff,

medical personnel, and more. As COVID hit and outreach opportunities were cut down, BeBraveBg became a way for the church to reach the community without direct contact.

As a fairly new member of BUMC, Amy Jarboe was searching for her place to serve, when Connections Minister, Cindy Hughes, called asking if she would consider being the project leader for BeBraveBg. She immediately said yes! BeBraveBg was a perfect fit for her. It combines her passion to reach others with love and encouragement.

“Our mission statement is that we want to be a source of hope and encouragement to the unseen, unheard, and under appreciated populations in our community,” Amy says. “That means we have to know those communities and what their needs are. Our broader goal is to educate our participants about the populations we serve, and educate them on how they can best help those folks. Not everyone will connect with every population, but the goal is to open our eyes to our broader community and look for new ways to serve our neighbors well. BeBrave's educational aspect is important to the goal of folks finding a population or organization they feel called to serve and being brave to grow that personal ministry further. We're just introducing you to them, opening your eyes to the people and opportunities to love one another in Bowling Green and Warren County.”

BeBraveBG is a new group, and hopes to grow in unique ways. Facebook is the best way to keep in touch and stay up to date on what population or organization is their focus for the month and how they will be serving them.

So far BeBraveBG has served the essential school staff that worked through the summer and prepared our schools for the start of an unusual year, the hard-working medical personnel, first

responders, and CASA volunteer advocates and provided those groups with cards of thanks and encouragement and specially designed coloring sheets for each.

This month, September, they are focusing on the GEO Center of Warren County Public Schools, and the work they do with refugees, immigrants, and migrant students whose first language is not English. We are expanding our service opportunity to ask for school supply donations, diapers, as well as cards of encouragement.

In the coming months, they will be focusing on the homeless population, juvenile offenders, foster parents, and more. Each population has unique needs, strengths, and struggles. BeBraveBG hopes to share more about these people, how special they are, and how we can encourage and serve them best.

In closing, Amy adds, “I hope that our group can make people feel seen and appreciated. More

than that, I hope our group can connect individuals with community outreach and service projects that are meaningful to THEM.”

The greatest obstacle BeBraveBg faces is being a new organization. BeBraveBg is a community organization run through a church; however, you do not have to be a part of Broadway's congregation to participate and serve.

Join the BeBraveBg FB group to stay informed and participate in drop off collections which take place on the 19th of each month at both Broadway campuses.
