As a child, I would sit and watch my mom’s hands as she weaved the needle to and fro, around and through, it looked like magic.  How with a simple sway of the wrist, and wrap of the yarn, in and out and around again, turned into an amazing beautiful blanket!

My mom would crochet blankets for each new baby. Many got a second one as they got older. Nearly every single person in our family has a blanket made by my mom.  It was her way of showing she loved you and  you were important to her.  She made blankets for her friends and the friends of family as well.

Eventually, I did learn to crochet. As my mom gets older and she has lost some mobility and eyesight, she has passed the torch, and now I make blankets with love for my friends and family too.

My first project was a scarf for a friend when I was in the 6th grade. Then I took a long long break from crochet and only recently (about 5 or 6 years ago) picked back up the hobby.  I am not as fast as my mom was, and our stitches are as unique as we are.  I recently repaired my nephew's blanket that was made by mom, it was a challenge as her stitches and mine are so different.  But it turned out well, I think.

When I make a blanket for someone, it is like creating a custom piece of art. I want it to be specially designed for that person.  Yarn selection is like selecting your medium for a painting. Not just colors, but texture and then selecting the placement and the pattern.  I love seeing the reaction when someone sees their blanket for the first time.

Crocheting also has a calming effect for me. I have anxiety and working on a blanket allows me to focus and leaves no time for my mind to wonder. It's a true practice of mindfulness and experiencing being in the now.

Here are some of the blankets I have made.

There are a lot of resources out there if you are interested in learning to crochet. Below I have provided the steps to the main stitch that I use, called the Double Crochet.

-Yarn over.

-Insert hook into the stitch where you want to place the stitch.

-Yarn over again and Pull through.

-Yarn over again.

-Pull through the first two of three loops on hook.

-Yarn over again

-Pull through the remaining two loops on hook.

Happy Crocheting!

I still have everything that my mom made for me. I love them all from the scarfs, blankets, coasters, backpack...
