Woman of the Week - Trish Beresford

Updated: Dec 21, 2020

Trish Beresford, the Choir/Theatre Teacher at BGHS, is striving to provide quality arts education for every student while building character, teaching respect, and perspective.

Trish says her greatest influence in life has been her parents. “My father, Bill Schlicht. He was a hard-working and respectful man who taught me that educating yourself was your biggest priority. He also taught us that it was our duty to serve God and our community. He was the least judgemental man I know. My mother is one of the smartest women I know. She raised 4 kids through many of my father's Army deployments, and she helped us all earn full scholarships to college. She is one of my best friends.”

“That's an easy question,” she responded to being asked about her greatest accomplishment. “I raised three beautiful, self-actualized women who firmly believe in serving others and working hard to improve other peoples' lives. They are the kindest people I know.”

The best advice she received was that every day we make choices that affect us and others. “We have to continuously try to make life-giving choices that will benefit not only ourselves, but the community (and the world) as well. If we choose out of love, we make the right choice.”

“The biggest adversity I've struggled with was my diagnosis of autoimmune disease with Rheumatoid Arthritis, Hashimoto's Disease and fibromyalgia,” Trish adds. “I was fatigued and in pain for years before I could get a diagnosis. Living in chronic pain can change the way you cope and the way you interact with others. I have not fully overcome the autommune, but after removing most of the stress in my life and drastically changing my lifestyle, I am in remission and have been able to go off most of my medicines. I am back to exercise in my MMA gym, Kentucky Grapplers.”

Trish notes the following resources for our readers. “For fellow autoimmune sufferers,The Phoenix Helix website is very helpful. (Phoenixhelix.com) For life coaching, I have worked with Christy Farr at The Unruly Woman. I keep my mind and body in shape by practicing Jeet Kun Do and Kali at my MMA gym, Kentucky Grapplers.”

Her goals moving forward include creating a positive learning environment in the school during this COVID season. “I want to build a relationship with each child, even if we end up going online. I want to use my music to teach love, compassion, and respect. This year I want to put my health and my relationships as a priority instead of an afterthought.”

“I just turned 50 and decided to make drastic changes in my life. I downsized into a smaller house and sold all of the extra possessions I had. I've chosen to spend my time with people that are life-giving instead of draining.”

In her free time, Trish loves to be outside. “I like to walk, to practice martial arts, to swim, to cook and to spend time laughing with my closest friends and family as often as I can. I am reading the play Augusta and Noble by Carlos Murillo. It is a tale about a young Mexican-American girl as she navigates the discovery of her heritage and her parents status as illegal immigrants. It's a fascinating perspective.”
