Woman of the Week: Martha Martinez

Martha Lynn Theresa Paddie-Martinez, Daughter, Mother, and Medical Technologist, loves to spread awareness about being grateful and kind. Her greatest influence in life has been her mother, Betty. “Mom taught me how to cook and how to run a household. She was my greatest

supporter and cheerleader. She would let me fall, and then when I got back up, she

would say, ‘What did you learn?’ She also introduced me to music; Music is medicine to my soul.”

Martha feels her greatest accomplishment has been raising her two children as a single mom.

“Charles and Selena are old souls with good hearts. Charles is 24 and lives in New York City, he is employed by designer Loewe in Saks Fifth Avenue. He is also an artist and was voted Best Hip/Hop performer 2019 by the Nashville Scene. My daughter Selena is also a musician. She plays drums and is in the trio called Strawberry Jam. She is employed at 643 Sports Bar and Grill and is shift lead in the kitchen. Both of my kids have incredible work ethic and are great humans. They are my greatest loves.”

The biggest adversity Martha had to overcome was an abusive marriage. “I was in a marriage where the one I was married to did his level best to break my spirit, to be able to keep me under his thumbing to change the things that made me who I am. My things from college were thrown away, mementos, pictures of friends were all gone when I came home from work. As time moved on, when he saw I could not be broken, he turned his abuse on my children, and that right there was when I knew it was time to end things. I prepared myself to raise my children alone. I made a promise to my young children that as long as I live they would not have to worry about anyone ever mistreating them again. I saved 3 souls from verbal abuse and mistreatment. I filed those divorce papers and never looked back. I know what it is to be hungry, to have utilities turned off, to sell every piece of silver and gold I had to put food on the table & to clothe my children. W

hen life knocked me down, I got right back up with the spirit of a warrior.”

The best advice Martha wants to pass to our readers is to know your worth. She added, “Know your heart and soul. Know what you have to offer in this world. Know that your inner beauty always shines through, so let your light shine. Know what you bring to the table. When things are not going well, learn to roll with it or it will surely roll over you. Always choose kindness and be grateful.”

Martha’s future projects include a second knee surgery. “I am having my right knee replaced. I had my left knee done in September and it has made such a difference. I cannot wait to have the other done! Look out world: I will probably be on a billboard.”

Martha loves music. “When I do not have the words, music has the medicine I need to heal me. I was and still am a HUGE Black Crowes fan. We grew up together. For every good & bad thing in my young adult life, The Crowes has a song that spoke to me. Prince was a huge influence on me, as well. I saw him in Memphis and he said, "Do not let society put you in a box, look the way you want to look, dress the way you want. do you the best you can, and when they try to put you in a box, bust that box up."

In her free time, Martha runs the Facebook fan page for The Josephines. “I am blessed to know so many in the music business locally and in Nashville. I love going to concerts and festivals.. Some of my favorite bands are Aerosmith, LED ZEPPELIN, Tom Petty, Motley Crue, The Cult. The Royal Court of China, INXS, U2 and so many others.”

What Martha is looking forward to most is being able to see and spend time with friends. “This pandemic has been so hard. I look forward to the day I can have a huge cookout at my home and invite everyone I know to dance the night away.”
