Jane Goodin Wilson is a Bowling Green Independent School Board Chairman, and she has been on the Bowling Green School Board for almost 8 years now. She is running for reelection this November for another four-year term. She has also proudly served on the St. Joseph School Board for eight years.
Jane has a deep belief in the power of a good education for all students, and she has worked to see that every child has the opportunity to reach their potential. She feels that educating students is so much more than simply putting a teacher in front of a classroom.
Jane adds, “Our school district searches for the best, most qualified teachers available. We offer them opportunities to grow professionally and to collaborate with other educators. Teachers, however, are just one part of the academic puzzle to reach our students. There are counselors, mental health professionals, medical staff, aides, lunchroom workers, bus drivers, administrators, and coaches who all have an impact on each student. Besides personnel, there are so many other areas that are critical in educating students: the buildings, state of the art technology, other academic resources, various class offerings, service for those with special needs and learning issues, among others. When I joined the board, I had no idea the state, federal and local regulations that need to be followed. And these regulations change every year. I am passionate about students receiving the best education possible.”
Her late parents, Robert L. and Jane Goodin, had the greatest influence on her. “My father co-owned a family-run oak flooring company, and my mother was a homemaker. Both taught me the importance and dignity of hard work and dedication to a task. It was a given in our home that my five brothers and sisters and I would go on to college. They wanted each of us to reach our potential and thought the best way to do this was through good education.”
As a mother, Jane says that her greatest accomplishments are the births of her four daughters, Ashlee, Anne Taylor, Grace, and Madeline. In the public arena, she is proud to have served on the Bowling Green Board of Education and taken a small part in the construction of Dishman McGinnis Elementary School and the current building of a new Bowling Green High School. ”I am involved in the building of a new high school that is actually being built around the current high school. We are in the second of four phases. I also participated on the boards of St. Joseph School during a building addition and Holy Spirit Catholic Church in the building of our new church and parish hall.”
Jane thinks the best advice she has been given is that you should “Do unto others as you would have them do to you.” When asked what advice she wants to give to our readers, she had this to say: “I believe a lesson we all could use is to listen more, and speak less. We can learn so much more when we actually listen to what others have to say.”
Jane also feels that reading is very important. “Reading can teach you things about the world, or people, that you didn't know; it can transport you to other places and times; it can make you FEEL. I suggest reading as part of your daily routine.”
In her spare time, Jane loves to read, especially mysteries, and play crossword puzzles. “I'm in the Ladies Literary Club, a book club, and a bridge group. I also enjoy hiking and walking my dog, Ranger.”
“I do have to let everyone know that my daughter, Anne Taylor, with her husband Kyle, gave birth to our first grandchild, Emmett Wilson Peterson, on August 15, 2020. My husband, Steve, is thrilled to finally have a little boy in the family!”
