Woman of the Week - Brittany Whitlow

Updated: Dec 21, 2020

Brittany C. Whitlow is the Choir Director, Assistant Band Director at Warren Central High School. She is a private voice instructor, and also a beginning piano instructor. Her ideology is that all students are capable and should be taught music at a high standard, no matter what their economic status is.

Brittany’s greatest influence in life has been her mother. “She taught me how to be the woman I am today. When I was 16, she had a brain aneurysm. It left her paralyzed on her right side and in a nursing home for years. I had to become the woman of the house. When she finally was able to come home, I became her caregiver. Why not care for the person who gave me life? It is only respectful to do for her what she had done for me. Even though she was "different", I still learned so much from her. 10 years later, she passed away from renal failure. I miss her dearly, but her wisdom lives on in me and her spirit lives on in my daughter.”

“The best advice I’ve been given is an Einstein quote that my Mother instilled in my head at a young age and I have passed it down to my children and my students... "If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you have always got!"

Brittany feels her greatest accomplishment is getting where she is today. “I had my first son at 18. I was told I wouldn't amount to anything, just cursed with teenage pregnancy. I have 2 college degrees, my own home & vehicle, and a career that I absolutely love. I think I have done pretty well.”

Brittany reached a huge milestone in August. “I have finally accepted God's calling into the Ministry and I started Seminary at Regent University (online). My goals moving forward are to get through the holidays safely and sane! In my career, my students will have a Spring Musical of some sort, so be on the lookout for that.”

Her biggest adversity that she has overcome was divorce. “I dated a man who was my 3rd grade "boyfriend", who I lost touch with after that year, and we reunited in my senior year of highschool. Cute, right? Yes, but the growth of the relationship should not have gone past the reunion. We made our son before we were married, and being raised how I was, you marry who you make kids with! So, we tried to make it work. We did it for all of the wrong reasons. There was hurt from the past in both of our hearts, there was mental and emotional abuse, there was neglect. We separated two years before the divorce was final. There I was, hitting 30 with 3 children, doing everything on my own. It was a hard transition, but by the grace of God, I made it!”

For fun, Brittany loves to tap dance and cardio drum. For relaxation, she likes to binge watch old tv shows and read Romance Novels by Brenda Jackson. “Two books that have helped me through a lot in my transition and finding who I am are “SOAR!” by T.D. Jakes, and “Let Your Life Speak” by Parker J. Palmer. Right now, I am fully engulfed in reading books from my Seminary classes! They are interesting and educational. I love it!”
